E. R. Porter Hardware Company was started in 1889 and has remained in the Porter family ever since. It operated as the oldest business in the city of Dothan and was considered the oldest continually operating hardware store in the state of Alabama until the day it closed. E. R. Porter Hardware Museum was created to honor the tradition and importance that the hardware store brought to Dothan’s city core. During its day, it was a place to purchase goods, do business, and gather to discuss town matters. The Porter Hardware Company was so established in the community as “THE” place to find anything you needed, that “if Porter Hardware doesn’t have it, it’s not in town!” was the common slogan amongst the community.
We will now be home to the E. R. Porter Hardware Museum. We will also house the downtown location of the Convention and Visitors Bureau as well as the DDRA home offices.
