The Dothan Downtown Heritage Fund helps to preserve the history and heritage of our area by developing and engaging in projects and programs for the purpose of enhancing and revitalizing Downtown Dothan, Alabama
WHAT WE DO
We promote the revitalization of Dothan Downtown’s historic properties and sites through education, advocacy, public-private partnerships, and public events.
WHY WE DO IT
We are the only nonprofit organization whose mission includes revitalization of the downtown core, and a healthy downtown is key to a strong community.
Heritage Fund Events
The Heritage Talks series is a community round table series that will be held periodically at Porter Hardware Museum throughout year. Intimately set inside the 1895 historic hardware museum, locals will speak on a variety of topics related to the history and heritage of Dothan as well as exploring exciting possibilities for the future of downtown. We will bring a variety of speakers and experiences to our community to engage in meaningful conversation in hopes of educating, inspiring and promoting the sense of community that Dothan has long had.

E.R. Porter Hardware
Current Project
E. R. Porter Hardware Company was started in 1889 and has remained in the Porter family ever since. It operated as the oldest business in the city of Dothan and was considered the oldest continually operating hardware store in the state of Alabama until the day it closed. E. R. Porter Hardware Museum was created to honor the tradition and importance that the hardware store brought to Dothan’s city core. During its day, it was a place to purchase goods, do business, and gather to discuss town matters. The Porter Hardware Company was so established in the community as “THE” place to find anything you needed, that “if Porter Hardware doesn’t have it, it’s not in town!” was the common slogan amongst the community.
We will now be home to the E. R. Porter Hardware Museum. We will also house the downtown location of the Convention and Visitors Bureau as well as the DDRA home offices.
